  • Vocabulary Instruction
  • Various Comprehension Skills
  • Reading Response & Graphic Organizers

Each student will be required to Read At Home each homework night.

RAH (Read At Home)

Each night your child needs to:
  1. Read for 10 minutes.

What is Accelerated Reader?

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading management software that provides teachers with an effective way to monitor all forms of reading practice.  AR will be incorporated into our FIT program as well.

·      AR gets students excited about books.  AR helps teachers focus attention on careful reading of books, which improves students’ critical thinking skills and builds an intrinsic love of reading.

·      We obtain reliable, objective information.  Six different types of quizzes give teachers valuable data in students’ textbook reading, library book reading, literacy skills development and more.

Accelerated Reader’s three easy steps help teachers guide students to choose appropriate books at their own reading level.  This means that every student is challenged without being frustrated.

·      Student reads a book.  Types of reading may include guided, paired, literature-based, and textbook reading.  All books are labeled for reading level so that students can be guided to choices appropriate for their own level of reading skill.

·      Student takes a quiz.  The quizzes provide assessment information to help motivate reading, monitor progress, and target book choices to accelerate reading growth.

·      You get information.  Easy-to-read reports on the reading level and comprehension skills of each student will help the student select more reading materials.  They also allow you to see quiz results and keep up to date on AR progress.

How can you help at home?

Ask your child what he/she is reading for AR.  If it is a title you do not have access to at home, consider borrowing a copy from the Absecon Public Library or purchase one for your own collection.  Many students do not have enough time at school to read their AR choices daily.  Reading for 10 minutes every night will now be a regular part of your child’s homework routine.  This will allow all students to gain more practice reading for understanding, finish reading selections and take quizzes.

Each passing quiz grade is worth points that the students accrue over the school year.  Our third graders are already motivated by this idea as they work to earn as many points as they can.  Perhaps awards may be given to individuals based on AR points this year.  We may even set a class goal with a prize in June.  Accelerated Reader is a program that will motivate all third graders to read, understand, and enjoy their selections.
