Mrs. Adams Unit on Rocks & Minerals

Property-something about an object (rock) that can be observed (seen).
color, luster, texture, hardness
Mineral-material that was never alive and that can be found in soil.

Igneous Rock-a rock that forms from melted minerals.
Magma- is HOT, melted rock.
Sedimentary Rock-    rocks that forms when layers of material are pressed together.

Metamorphic Rock-  an igneous or sedimentary rock that was changed by heat or pressure.

Decay- to slowly break down or rot

Humus-the decayed matter in soil

Nutrient-a material that plants and animals need to live and grow.

Clay Soil-tightly packed soild with tiny grains. (holds water)

Sandy Soil-loose soil with large grains.  (does not hold water)

Loam-is good planting soil that is a mixture of clay, sand and humus.

Notes:
·      Rocks are made of 1 or more minerals

Where do Minerals come from?????

·      They come from MATTER that was never alive.
·      2,500 known minerals in this world!!!
Silver is a mineral.

How do we use minerals in everyday life?
·      We eat with utensils. (spoons, forks, knives)
·      We open and close doors and cabinets with meta hinges.

What does PROPERTY mean?????????
Property-something about an object (rock) that can be observed (seen).

·      Rocks can be sorted by property. Things that make them stand out.
What are 2 examples of how to sort rocks by property?
·      Size
·      Shape

Rocks

How are rocks formed or made?
·      Rocks are formed by one or more minerals.
·      When you look at the colors in rocks each color is a different minerals.

Where are the minerals found?
·      Minerals are found in the earth.
·      Some on the top
·      Some deep down inside the earth where it is very HOT.

3 Types of Rocks:

Igneous Rock-a rock that forms from melted minerals.

Where are igneous rocks usually found?
·      Deep inside the earth where it is very HOT
·      Or when a volcano erupts and the magma cools.
·      When the magma cools it turns into an igneous rock.

What is magma?
Magma- is HOT, melted rock.

Where is magma found?
·      Deep inside the earth

Sedimentary Rock-    rocks that forms when layers of material are pressed together.

Where are they usually formed?
·      Under water
How do sedimentary rocks get pressed together?
·      Rivers and streams carry bits of rock, shells and other materials into lakes and oceans.

·      The rocks, shells and materials sink to the bottom and form layers.

·      These layers harden and make sedimentary rock?

How long does it take for sedimentary rock to harden?
·      They harden over MILLIONS OF YEARS.

Metamorphic Rock-  an igneous or sedimentary rock that was changed by heat or pressure.

What are 2 things that can make a metamorphic rock?
·      Heat inside the earth changes the rocks (minerals) into other rocks (minerals.)
·      Pressure (extreme pushing ) pushes the rocks (minerals) together to make different rocks (minerals)

Soil:  What is soil made of and how is it formed?

·      Large rocks break into many small pieces.
·      Rain or snow breaks off parts of larger rocks.
·      When the bits of rocks fall off…..it leaves a space.
·      Soil then gets in the empty crack and plants can grow.

So………SOIL IS MADE OF ROCKS!!!!!
·      Soil is also made of
o  Air, water and matter (that was once alive)

·      When plants and animals die they begin to decay or rot.
·      The decayed matter (plant or animal that died) is called  humus and becomes part of the soil.
·      Humus gives the soil a dark color and adds nutrients.
·      Nutrients are needed for plants to live and grow

There are 3 types of soil

Clay Soil-tiny grains that are tightly packed.  This soil is smooth. Has many nutrients and hold water well.  Plants do not grow well because the grains are so close

Sandy soil is loose and easy to dig.    It has LARGE GRAINS.  Plants do not grow well in sandy soil because it does not hold water well, and does not have many nutrients.

Loam-Good planting soil that is made up of clay and sand and has humus.  It holds water and nutrients for the plants to live and grow.

Decay- to slowly break down or rot

Humus-the decayed matter in soil

Nutrient-a material that plants and animals need to live and grow.

Clay Soil-tightly packed soild with tiny grains. (holds water)

Sandy Soil-loose soil with large grains.  (does not hold water)

Loam-is good planting soil that is a mixture of clay, sand and humus.
